Minor quibble with your argument, but: Combo drive expensive? I don't think so. The media is the same size and composition, and the PS3, as a gaming system, replaces all the software side of a typical disc player. And it's modifiable, so any difference in software required to read an HDDVD could easily be written in.
The only combo players out there are expensive only because they need to include both sets of firmware and manage the two.
