There will be a LOT of patent issues if Sony will try and do that. It will be like trying to invent something to put underneath a car but it can't be round, or from rubber. There is a reason why only Microsoft and Apple are selling OS's. They have been in the market for 25 years, that's going to be very hard getting in there. It also shows how much appreciation I have for the Linux community.
On the other hand, you can equip your PS3 with Yellow Dog Linux. This was intended to be distributed with PS3 but wasn't at the last minute, you can still get it for free though (I think). I bet Yellow dog has had some money from Sony's side.
