Mitsubishi working on 3D Blu-ray players, displays
We've seen a couple attempts at large-scale 3D displays that split DLP's 120Hz display rate into two 60Hz HD fields, but Mitsubishi is apparently showing off a slightly more advanced version of the technology at The Barclay's PGA Tour event, featuring 3D content on Blu-ray discs. According to CNET, the company showed off a Blu-ray system using a "massive" Dell desktop and a large DLP display that enabled viewers to watch commercials, movies, and sporting events in 3D using special stereoscopic glasses. The content had been shot in 3D from the get-go, but Mitsubishi says it's working on a Blu-ray player that will be able to turn standard 2D content into simulated 3D -- and that it'll be out early next year. The company also coyly hinted that it's talking to a "console manufacturer" about integrating the tech into a game system. We'll give you one guess as to who that might be.[Image courtest of TWICE]

Great. That's what Blu-Ray needs right now--another format. Blu-Ray is going to win the format war--in the year 2020.

Sounds like a pretty good upgrade to me. 2D to 3D? Who would complain besides the puckered anus's like yourself.
Dave @ Aug 24th 2007 6:27PM
I have to keep my anus puckered--since you're obviously trying to ride my ass.
mr friggles @ Aug 24th 2007 10:02PM
Who would ride the ass of an idiot? If sony comes out with 3D games/movies they would win the console wars & the format wars simultaneously, hands down. Do you seriously think an HD player could ever compare to a 3D movie player?? Do you think an x-box could ever beat out a 3D PS3?? It would be a complete shut-out. The fact they would be adding this to an existing platform (bluray) is a plus, not a negative.

"Who would ride the ass of an idiot?"
You--as you continue to demonstrate.
By the way, what's this about a "3D PS3"? I thought the PS3 was 4D.

On second thought... That last comment makes me sound like an idiot doesn't it? Of course, that makes you sound like an idiot-rider... Crap. It's a stalemate.

Sony will be the lucky one since they are determined to have the newest tech in their console. And besides, it's blu-ray! Nintendo would be too cheap and MS have too much problems to get involved with this.

"Sony will be the lucky one since they are determined to have the newest tech in their console."
The company that shipped a sub-dreamcast PS2 without an ethernet port? please.
Sony is determined to have -their- tech in their console. It has jack all to do with anything else.
That said: any 3d tech that requires stereoscopic glasses is weaksauce. people don't like it - move on.
a boy @ Aug 24th 2007 8:38AM
Hey roc.
Did you have a hard time reading in school? I'll let you on in a secret, today is all about HD generation consoles. Meaning I'm not talking about PS2, but PS3. You can't say they didn't try to stuff the PS3 with the newest tech. Also, you said "people don't like it - move on", how many people are you talking for, and who are these "people"? Are they the cuddly teddybears wearing diapers in your room? So YOU don't like it, fine. It's just my guess that Sony will be the one getting this tech.

That's cool, just screw over all the early adopters. People got pissed when the 360 got the new heat sink, HDMI, and the biggger hard drive but they didn't add another fucking dimenson to the screen.
Marty @ Aug 24th 2007 7:59AM
The upgrade could probably be accomplished via a software update, so early adopters should probably not have anything to worry about.
Neebs @ Aug 24th 2007 7:00AM
One step closer to getting to the 4D with teh blu-rayz.
fraggle_rocker @ Aug 24th 2007 7:52AM
I always wondered why they never implemented something like this sooner, should be interesting.

3D ps3 HD games? The future is now (Or next year).
teej @ Aug 24th 2007 11:31AM
gotta come out with games first, so the future is definitely not this year.
ChaosEntity @ Aug 24th 2007 7:31PM
Dear God! Sony might just win the console war yet. Possibly. This will be the thing that pulls Sony out of the abyss it's fallen into. I can't wait to try playing games in real 3D.

Mitsubishi have good reason to be working to develop more 3D content as they have their 3D enabled DLP HDTVs on the market at the moment. They also have an interest in x.v.Color, the new larger color space xvYCC color standard, as it is supported by their DLP HDTVs but there are few video sources supporting it. Their competitor Sony has the BDP-S300 Blu-ray player with x.v.Color support.
