Sony's BDP-S1E: Improved Blu-ray player hits Europe this summer
Sony has finally officially announced its first standalone Blu-ray player for the European market. Just like the PlayStation 3, a several month delay on the hardware has resulted in a few hardware revisions, however instead of limited backwards compatibility, the new BDP-S1E adds HDMI 1.3 and x.v. Colour support -- for AVC-HD-encoded discs -- to the package. Along with 1080p/24 output from the earlier model, this should make it an excellent player for aficionados demanding that "film-like" experience when paired with any of the new BRAVIAs hitting the market soon. With the BDP-S1E due this summer, no word on a price, or if Europe will ever see the BDP-S300 that should be launching in the U.S. around that time, but since its not a continent of "cheap people", we're sure they'll be able to deal with it.[Via Crave]

Still the form factor leaves something to be desired... There's no reason they can't slim this down considerably.

If this priced anywhere in the range of the Samsung blu ray player, which retails north of £600, why on earth would anyone buy this over the PS3, especially as it's here now for £425 and widely available...

IIRC PS3 don't scale up/down HD quality.

I'm with CharlieX on this one. Why is it with the big push to hide all your 'media devices' in the living room so that it is a pleasant view that manufacturers continue to market huge and gaudy looking components such as this. Gimme a book looking device I can hide on the shelf

Why would anyone buy this or the Panny or especially the Pioneer when they can grab the PS3 or the LG and play both formats? Sorry Sony, but brand name alone wills ell to those 17 people who don't care but will do nothing for your sales or stock.....

Quite a few people require 7.1 analogue out, not hdmi, and the PS3 doesn't even have a scaler and isn't multiregion either. So the Panny 10a fills these requirements nicely. That's why people buy products. It's called functionality.

You obviously have no sense of style. The colour and texture of the BDP-S1 had a lot of thought and consideration put into the design. The blue colour symbolizes the innovation and potential of the Blu-ray disc medium. The clear texture of the glass also expresses clarity, to emphasize the Full HD nature of Blu-ray disc. There is a lot of symbolism behind the design of the BDP-S1.
