I see the smearing effect that you're talking about on LCDs and DLPs. I just upgraded to a 50" Panasonic (TH-50PH9UK - 720p) from a Panny 42" 480p set - partly because I really like what I see with plasma technology. I say go with feels right when you watch the set you have, if it's not enjoyable and the artifacts, etc get to you - then it may be time to give another technology a chance.
You'll probably find a bunch of good deals on the 42" plasmas as we get closer to the new models coming out (unless you wanna wait and spring for the new hotness).
