Palm chooses September to announce new Treo
One might argue we've collected enough intelligence at this point to make an official announcement ourselves, but according to a Reuters report, Palm has committed to unveiling at least one of its next-gen Treos for reals (without our help) next month. From the way Palm is talking, it sounds like this debut will be for the Windows Mobile-based UMTS model first mentioned for Vodafone in July, though we're guessing Cingular's Treo 750 isn't far behind (right, Palm?). Other than that tidbit, Palm's asking us all to patiently wait for the September 12 when the press releases start flying -- but one thing we can say with near certainty is that there won't be a stub antenna anywhere in sight.[Thanks, Dave]

Actually, I'd rather they did NOT rush the new model... Although woefully underspec'ed, the Treo 600 was quite stable. The 650 has been an utter bloody pain, constantly crashing, etc. And when they released a new software / firmware (Vodafone Spain), you needed to be a rocket scientist with 6 hours to spare, AND it still didn't solve many of the problems!! And don't get me started about their fcuking "Real Mail" software...
So, Treo, please, I beg of you... take your time. Steady. No rush. Think about it. Look both ways...

I just hope they change the design. I love my 650, but after seeing my friend's Q in person, I really want to have a thin phone. Taking out that ugly antenna is a great start, though.

I must say, I love my BlackBerry. :)

I haven't been excited about a Treo launch in a long time(650), and this news doesn't help. Where is the Linux treo? Releasing yet another windows mobile phone isn't much of a launch..

I have the 700W, had it since January 19th. It's relatively stable, but it's really only good at email and phone calls. And even then, if it's got something it's doing in the background, the phone will just act goofy... going to sleep for unexplained reasons. I suspect the CPU is busy... because if you're patient, it will come back... but if you're expecting a call, or need to make a call when this happens? Forget about it. Pull the back, hit reset, and you're better off. I've actually considered getting my Dremel and drilling a hole in the back so I can hit reset with a stylus rather than having to pull the back off.
But, my friends with 650's aren't in any better shape. Haven't talked to anyone with a 700P. But, if they do come out with another Windoze version, it needs more horsepower.

this looks very good... as long as they give it enough power to run WM5, i think it will be a winner.
this will end up coming out before the HP hw69xx series... can anyone say vaporware (at least here in the US)

Who says the 600 was stable? I owned two, and they crashed repeatedly during phone calls (as well as other times). My 700p is much more stable.

All the comments about Treo 650 being unstable have you installed any software?
First try running the Treo without anything other than ROM software if you still have an issue then get it swapped.
There are lots of applications that do not play nicely with the Treo 650, its best to start empty then add one application at a time.
I've had a Treo 650 for about 18 months now and I love it I run the following apps:-
Audible
AvantGo
Card Export
Documents to Go
Tom Tom Navigator
pTunes (full version)
FileZ
Launcher X
magicButton
mobileClock
TCPMP
U2U
WorldWyse
Bejeweled
I get the odd crash (once every couple of weeks), but they are caused by the apps I’m running not the Rom apps.
Its a fantastic device, is if you have issues do a Hardware reset and go vanilla apps you'll be amazed =)

Is the bible for the Treos.

I've owned the Treo 600 from then Handspring, and had to have it replaced from the manufacturer five times in less then a year. I eventually just used it for the PDA functions and carried around the Moto 600 for a few months before switching to the Moto MPX-220. I jumped on the Treo 650 right when it came out, and have never looked back. I am still on my first 650, and it's still a great phone. The speaker phone is starting to go out on it, but I have dropped it so many times on hard surfaces, I'm still amazed it still works. Over all I love my 650, but I'm ready to upgrade. I hope Palm will release a smaller, thinner, Palm-based version of the new phone.

The 600, in my experience, was fine software/OS wise, just the hardware was a bit of an issue (THAT F***ING BUZZING NOISE!!!)
The 650 was crashy crashy until you applied the final OS updater whiched fixed some major memory leaks, then it stabilized.
Seeing as I am a GSM user... I'll be waiting for this '750' to see what the deal is.

I've had my Treo 650 since February of 2005 and the only problem I've had (and continue to have) is intermittent LOUSY sound quality. Sometimes when I place a call and it's ringing, it's more of a static sound than an actual ring, breaking up and soundeing like a frog with a sore throat. But as I said, that's the ONLY problem I've had with it; I'm a very happy customer on Cingular Wireless and will probably take a hard look at the Treo 750.
Bill Williams @ Aug 25th 2006 8:16AM
I forgot to say in my previous input - I will definitely NOT buy a Treo that uses anything other than the Palm OS. I have friends who bought the Treo 700 after having a Treo 650 and the Windows Mobile OS drives them nuts. If the 750 doesn't offer Palm OS, I'll wait until one comes out that does.
