Matsushita's biggest eva
It took a while for them to get all 103 of those inches in order -- we first saw this display in January at CES, and were promised a 2006 release in April -- but Matsushita is finally ready to sell their "world's biggest plasma" to well-heeled customers with large empty spaces on their walls. At 473 pounds, you'd better hope that's an incredibly strong wall, but as for price we're still in the dark. With a 1080p resolution, and a 3000:1 contrast ratio, the only display that comes close to this is Samsung's 102-incher, but not only does it miss a whole inch of real estate, Samsung still hasn't offered theirs up for sale yet. Around 5,000 of these will be made each year, so if you want to nab one by the holidays we recommend you pull out an indescribably large wad of cash and head on over to Japan before we beat you to it.

WOW!
Imagine this thing hooked up to a pc.
One crazy display!
who would need something this big?
oh yeah... me.
can someone explain what plasma display's are good for besides movies (given that it only takes about 15 minutes to burn one and a powerpoint slide could easily be discused for longer than that in a meeting)? and why would this be better than a similarly priced projector for movies?
I can just see this. 103, 104, 105, 106... Can't they just tell use when they have actually come up with a decent breakthrough like 100" for say $300?
Chris. plasmas no longer have burn in issues that was with earlier models. The reason it is better than projectors is plasmas have the best closest picture quality to a glass tube. they have deep contrast and better viewing angles than any other tech right now. high end plasmas like fujitsu also have very good video processing and can make standard def signals look like high def. Not the junk ones you pick up at bestbuy.
Author sez: "... a whole inch of real estate ..."
But it's 1" diagonal, so it's really 88 square inches more. That's like having a 102" plasma AND an extra 14" TV!!
this would be awesome for pr0n!!
Yeah, 'shmengie' this would be SWELL for pr0n, because I don't have to do enough explaining to my wife already ("Seriously honey, those guys have surgery or something to get like that . . . anyway, great weather out today, huh?"). Now she'll expect my pen!s to literally stretch across the living room . . .
Fact that they are actually selling them, and making 5,000 of them is the greatest break through.
Samsung and LG only made one protoype display unit of their gigantic plasma, Panasonic/Matsushita wins just by the fact they got it to market.
However, probably cost as much as an economy car, but its a display as big enough to replace high-end projection setup. The really high-end projectors (not cheap-ass Infocus projecters) can cost tens of grand.
It'll be a good option to replace projecters for millonares that have their own home theater in their house.
holy smokes, imagine xbox 360 on that mofo! total ownage on xbox live! the only things is that i will have to wait until its comes down to about $8000 , which will be in like 5 yrs, damn you economics, Damn you!
At this size and price, I'd much rather just got a triple-DLP projector anyway. Much MUCH more bang for the buck!
Mmmm I want one.
I wonder how much clothes cost in the Matrix.
I wonder if Matsushita takes mortal souls as payment...
my Visa's already maxx0rd
We all know what this'll be mostly used for, don't deny the true Pornographical use. I don't mean REGULAR porn, heck no, on this baby you'd be witnessing boobs that'll look like they're trying to gauge your eyes out. Now THAT's entertainment XD
I'd want this instead of a projector because you can watch it with the lights on in the room and not every window and door sealed off.
Plus, it would be cool to have the worlds largest (consumer) tv
